Pfizer Inc. on Monday said it will lose its patent exclusivity on the blockbuster drug Celebrex, a drug that once dominated the blockbuster market. The company said it would seek to extend the patent on Celebrex to include the drug in the United States.
Celebrex is the brand name for the Celebrex pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory drug.
Pfizer said the patent extension would be applied to the blockbuster drug in three phases: early-phase (phase I), early-phase (phase II) and late-phase (phase III). The company will retain the rights to the drug until late-stage Phase III.
The company previously applied for 180 days of royalty payments on Celebrex from Pfizer in the United States and Europe, and now said it will pay 180 days of royalty payments. Pfizer has also filed a patent infringement suit against Pfizer, claiming infringement of the patents for the drug.

There is a worldwide increased incidence of pre-existing heart failure, which is attributed to use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE, leading to increased mortality and increased morbidity. Today, the global incidence of pre-existing heart failure is approximately 52 cases per 100,000 women, which is increasing at a rate of 1-2%[1].The global prevalence of heart failure in women is 52.8% and approximately 1 in 4 Indian women are considered as being at risk of heart failure. Prevalence of heart failure is associated with body mass index (BMI) of 28 kg/m2, age of onset of symptoms ( onset between 40 and 70, pre-existing heart failure and post-existing heart failure[1][[4]], BMI of 25 kg/m2 and BMI of 25 kg/m2)[1].
In 2016, a case-control study, Chinese observational study, the prevalence of heart failure in patients with chronic heart failure showed 55.3% as the population under investigation, with a total of 736 patients reported in this study.
